Joash’s Jiggers (Tunga Penetrans, Chigoe Fleas)

Joash is just one of the countless Africans afflicted by jiggers, aka tunga penetrans or chigoe fleas. They are a tiny, parasitic sand flea that preys upon humans and other mammals. The flea burrows under the skin, causing infection that can even lead to amputation if left untreated. One effective method of treatment is to dig them out, cutting away at the layers of infected, dead skin. This method is demonstrated in today’s video.
